Mental Mealth Key To Coronavirus Defeat – Survivors

Some survivors of the Federal Capital Territory’s (FCT) coronavirus (COVID-19) pandemic say mental wellbeing is crucial to combating the virus. The COVID-19 survivors said this on Saturday in Abuja, in separate interviews with newsmen. Ms. Mary Adenuga, 29, and a lawyer confirmed she had recovered from the infection on July 17, after having tested positive.

She said that she experienced severe chest pains, extreme fatigue, lack of appetite and a high fever.

“After eventually going through with the test, I spent 14 days at home in self-isolation while waiting for the test results.

“My worst fear was confirmed when the results came out positive. By that time, i was already taking remedies like ,ginger and lemon. Steaming myself with ointment and drinking lots of hot beverages

“When I knew my status, I continued to self-isolate while religiously taking remedies to treat my symptoms,” she said.

She counselled people who tested positive to shut out negative thoughts of how dangerous and lethal the virus could be.

The lawyer advised them to stay positive and be strong mentally at all times.

“As a Christian, I kept telling myself that it is not over until God says it is over, that helped me block out any negative energy.

“I didn’t receive any counseling prior to receiving my results, and I wished I had,” she said.

The lawyer reiterated the importance of emotional support for COVID-19 patients.

Mr Elias Osakwe, 43-year-old Psycologist admonished the government to make mental health issues part of post COVID-19.

“We need to be vigilant about screening patients, looking for signs and symptoms in our loved ones and friends, and even ourselves if we are survivors.

“Just enquiring about emotional well-being can go a long way,” Osakwe said.

Mrs Carolina Okoh, a c-ivil servant said that the government should consider building holistic, integrated care for COVID-19 survivors.

Okoh said that such holistic approach would look directly at mental health and offer treatment, referral and support as necessary.

“COVID-19 is not just an illness that you get and either die from or survive, long-term effects on mental health exist and might be chronic.

“Just because I did not die does not mean that my life is not completely altered by the experience.

“There have been studies of lungs and heart disease and someone told me also of a brain disease, and remember these are new chronic diseases that are accumulating as a result of the virus spreading, and affecting young people.”

She called on the Presidential Task Force on COVID-19 to speak more about survivors and the need to build the infrastructure that they need to get and stay well physically and mentally.

Okoh noted that the effects of the social, psychosocial, and medical consequences of the virus was a defining issue for a long time.

According to journalist Fabrizio Romano, Barcelona has decided to sack the head coach Quique Setien.

LaLiga giants Barca were humiliated in the quarter-finals of the Champions League on Friday after an 8-2 humiliation for Bayern Munich’s Bundesliga holders.

Barca have already decided Setien – who replaced Ernesto Valverde in January – will not continue in 2020-21, and former Tottenham boss Mauricio Pochettino has already been linked, while club great Xavi and Massimiliano Allegri are other possible options.

ROUND-UP

– The Star reports Manchester United are eyeing Atletico Madrid star Saul Niguez. United have been linked to the Spain international previously and are believed to be ready to revive their interest.

Barcelona Is Depending On Messi – Schuster

Barcelona Is Depending On Messi – Schuster

According to Bernd Schuster, Barcelona are more dependent on Lionel Messi than they’ve ever been.

In the Champions League, despite surrendering their lead at the top of LaLiga and missing out on the title to Real Madrid arch-rivals, Messi ensured Barca did not suffer any more disappointment.

The six-time Ballon d’Or winner scored a tremendous solo goal in the last-16 second leg against Napoli last Saturday, while he had another seemingly legitimate goal ruled out by VAR.

Messi’s effort helped Barca to a 3-1 victory at Camp Nou, setting up a quarter-final date with Bayern Munich in Lisbon.

Former Barca midfielder Schuster was unimpressed by displays from the players, saying they were never more dependent on Messi than they were under Quique Setien.

“If you compare the two teams, Bayern have the full squad and are more complete on the pitch. That’s because Barcelona are more dependent on Messi this season than they have ever been,” Schuster told Bild.

“There used to be players like Neymar and [Andres] Iniesta alongside him, but after that they couldn’t bring in any world-class players.

“It has to be said Messi can still win games on his own. He has the quality to score goals against Bayern and decide the game on his own.

“You have to say that [Messi will beat Bayern]. There are only two choices this season for Barcelona: either Messi scores the goal, or they have a world-class day without the ball in the game.”

Bayern will need to overcome Barca to keep their treble hopes alive, having already won the Bundesliga and the DFB-Pokal.

Assessing the chances of success in Portugal for Hansi Flick’s team, Schuster added: “The way they have played so far and won the championship, they are one of the favourites for me.”

Schuster also considers Atletico Madrid, another of his former clubs, to be serious contenders for the title.

Atleti reached the Champions League final in 2014 and 2016 and he expects them to be able to exploit RB Leipzig’s lack of experience in European competition and the absence of Timo Werner, who left to join Chelsea, when they meet in the last eight on Thursday.

“The final is definitely a step too far, but what they have achieved so far is excellent,” Schuster said of Leipzig.

“You have to see what a young and sometimes inexperienced team they have – and that is at the Champions League level.

“Atletico are regulars who have been playing at the top level for years, and have been in the final twice.

“Leipzig also have the disadvantage of having lost Timo Werner.”

Ozil Wants To Stay At Arsenal Despite Transfer Reports

Mesut Ozil has stated he plans to remain at Arsenal until next year’s deal expires. It has been reported that World Cup winner Ozil is seeking an exit from Emirates Stadium after failing to make an appearance for the Gunners following lockdown.

Last week Arsenal reported plans to make 55 staff redundant due to the coronavirus pandemic and are said to be willing to get Ozil’s compensation – estimated to be £350,000 a week – off the wage bill.

However, the 31-year-old playmaker insists he will remain at the club and give his all during the coming season.

“My position is clear. I’m here through to the last day of our agreement and I’ll give everything I have for this club,” Ozil told The Athletic.

“Situations like these will never break me, they only make me stronger. I showed in the past that I can come back into the team and I will show it again.

Regarding reports Arsenal were contemplating buying Ozil out of the last year of his contract, he said: “I’ll decide when I go, not other people. I didn’t sign for two or three years, I signed for four and that should be respected by everyone.”

Ozil’s latest deal was a three-and-a-half-year agreement announced in February 2018.

He said: “Things have obviously been difficult but I love Arsenal, I love to work there, I love the people in the club – the real people, those I’ve been with for a long time – and I love London, it’s my home.”

He claims he could have earned “far more money” as a free agent but had agreed to extend his Arsenal contract because of his commitment to the club, saying that head coach Mikel Arteta “knows my quality”.

“I’m not going into pre-season thinking, ‘Final year, I can chill – I know I don’t play’,” Ozil added. “These are not easy times for Arsenal and I want to help. I still have a lot to offer and I train as hard as I can, whether I’m in the squad or not.”
