US health Chief Sceptical Of Russia’s Claim To Coronavirus Vaccine

The U.S. Health Chief expressed concern on Wednesday about Russia’s claim to produce the world’s first safe coronavirus vaccine, pointing to the lack of evidence from its initial trials.

Moscow said Tuesday its vaccine offered “sustainable immunity” against the virus, but Western scientists have previously raised concerns about the development speed of Russian treatments, suggesting researchers were cutting corners.

US Health Secretary Alex Azar echoed those concerns Wednesday as he wrapped up a three-day visit to Taiwan.

“It’s important that we provide safe, effective vaccines and that the data be transparent… This is not a race to be first,” he told reporters during a conference call.

“I should note that two of the six US vaccines that we’ve invested in entered the phase three clinical trials weeks ago that the Russian vaccine is now only beginning,” he added.

“The data from the initial trials (of the vaccine) in Russia have not been disclosed, it’s not transparent.”

Russian President Vladimir Putin said the vaccine was safe, and that one of his daughters had received a dose.

The vaccine has been named “Sputnik”, after the world’s first artificial satellite that helped the Soviet Union take the lead in the Cold War space race in 1957.

Governments are under huge pressure to find a vaccine against the coronavirus, which has killed more than 700,000 people worldwide and eviscerated the global economy since it first emerged in central China late last year.

The United States is the worst-hit country, with nearly 5.1 million infections and more than 163,000 deaths.

President Donald Trump is facing a tough fight to get re-elected in November, trailing rival Joe Biden in the polls as anger mounts over his administration’s response to the pandemic.

Azar said he was confident a vaccine would be available for Americans.

“We believe that it is highly credible that we will have in the high tens of millions of doses of gold-standard, safe and effective vaccine by the end of this year, and many hundreds of millions of doses as we go into the beginning of next year,” he said.

Trump has launched “Operation Warp Speed”, which aims to develop, manufacture and distribute a coronavirus vaccine to all Americans by January 2021.

So far, Washington has handed out at least $9.4 billion to seven vaccine developers and signed manufacturing contracts with five of them to provide 700 million doses.

Azar’s Taiwan trip — the highest-level US visit since Washington switched diplomatic recognition to Beijing in 1979 — was billed as an opportunity to learn from the island’s success in containing the virus.

Taiwan has reported fewer than 500 infections and just seven COVID-19 deaths.

Barcelona Confirm One Positive Test On Coronavirus

Barcelona reported one positive Covid-19 check but there is no question about their upcoming Champions League clash with Bayern Munich.

Barca has reported that an undisclosed team member has contracted coronavirus, but the player in question was not included in the final shortlist of Quique Setien for the quarter-final match against Bayern on Friday.

The club have released a statement via their official website, which reads: “Following PCR tests conducted this Tuesday afternoon on the group of nine players due to begin the pre-season today, one of them has tested positive for Covid-19.

“The player has no symptoms, is in good health and has been quarantined at his home. The club has reported the matter to the relevant sporting and health authorities.

“All persons who have been in contact with the player have been tracked to perform the corresponding PCR tests.

“The player has not been in contact with any of the senior team players who are scheduled to travel to Lisbon this Thursday to compete in the Champions League.”

Setien will still take his original 22-man squad to Lisbon on Thursday as the Champions League reaches its conclusion in a revised straight knockout format in Portugal.

All players within that group are still being subjected to regular testing, and as it stands, the fixture against Bayern will go ahead as scheduled.

This latest news comes just two days after a coronavirus scare in Atletico Madrid’s camp ahead of their last-eight meeting with RB Leipzig.

Atletico confirmed that two members of their Champions League squad had been forced to self-isolate at home after testing positive for Covid-19, raising fears over the potential postponement of their tie against the German outfit.

However, Atletico announced changes to their preparations to ensure the safety of players and staff in the following club statement: “The corresponding action protocol foreseen for these cases has been activated, which requires new PCR tests to be carried out on the first team and members of the travelling party to Lisbon and the closest contacts of the positive cases.

“These tests will result in changes to training schedules, and in the structure and development of travel and accommodation in the Portuguese capital.

“The club will coordinate the new schedules with UEFA and as soon as there is a new plan, it will be made public.”

Barca and Atletico could meet in the Champions League final, with the former set to face Manchester City or Lyon in the last four if they beat Bayern, and the latter in line to tackle Paris Saint-Germain or Atalanta should they overcome Leipzig.

Don’t Waste State Funds On Edo And Ondo States Elections, PDP Warns Governor

Not To Waste State Funds On Edo And Ondo States Elections, PDP Warns Governor

The People’s Democratic Party, chapter in Lagos State, has warned Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu against spending state-owned funds on the upcoming governorship elections in Ondo and Edo states.

It was included in a press release by the spokesman for the Lagos PDP, Gani Taofik, on Wednesday titled ‘Resist Wasting Lagos Funds Ondo.’

The party raised an alarm in the assertion that “Lagos funds would most likely be redirected into the contest of the APC Ondo state governorship.”

It alleged that making Sanwo-Olu the Chairman of APC campaign council for the Ondo election was a way of asking him to finance the election.

The statement read, “The selection of Sanwoolu as Head of the APC Ondo State Governorship campaign council cannot be for his political experience but because the APC intends to use Lagos funds to run the Ondo elections.

“The party urge the Lagos State Commissioner for Finance and the Accountant General to prepare for accountability within this period of Edo and Ondo elections.

“We will invite EFCC and also support the legal protest against this selection targeted at diverting Lagos taxes in the face of colossal infrastructure inadequacies begging for attention in the state.

“Governor Sanwoolu should show empathy to Lagosians by rejecting the Greek gift selection as head of the APC campaign council, so as to concentrate on his much-touted quest to improve the state development.

“For the PDP, the state will be further plunged into avoidable debts and infrastructure deficits if the governor delves into such party assignments obviously distractive and prodigal at this time.”

Court Gets 42-Year-Old Man, Ramoni Amure, Arrested For ‘Rape’

On Wednesday, an Ikeja Chief Magistrates’ court ordered a 42-year-old man, Ramoni Amure, who is accused of raping an 18-year-old child, to be remanded in the Kirikiri correctional facility pending legal counsel.

The police charged Amure, who resides at No. 98 Okesuna St., Lagos Island, Lagos, with rape.

Chief Magistrate P.E. Nwaka, who did not take the plea of Amure, ordered the police to return the case file to the Lagos Director of Public Prosecutions for legal advice.

Nwaka adjourned the case until Sept. 23, for mention.

Earlier, the Prosecutor, Insp. Christopher John, told the court that Amure committed the offence on Dec. 22, 2018 at his residence.

John alleged that Amure, who raped the girl when she was 16, continued to sexually assault her.

The prosecutor said the offence contravened the provisions of Section 260 of the Criminal Law of Lagos, 2015.

The Section 250 stipulates life imprisonment for rape.
